Just hours after Biplob Kumar Dev resigned from the post of Tripura Chief Minister in an unprecedented move, Dr Manik Saha was appointed as the new Chief Minister of the state on Saturday which will go to the polls next year. Saha, a dentist by profession, was elected to the Rajya Sabha last month and is also the BJP’s Tripura state president.
Dev congratulated Saha on his election as the leader of the BJP Legislative Party. “@ DrManikSaha2 Congratulations and best wishes for being elected as the Leader of the Legislative Party. I believe Tripura will improve with the vision and leadership of Prime Minister Shri arenarendramodi, ”Dev tweeted.
With the state scheduled to face assembly elections early next year, Dev’s move came as a surprise to many, with even his cabinet ministers admitting they had no prior indication that he would do so.
Deb made the announcement after meeting the Governor at Raj Bhavan in Agartala.
“The party is above all. I am a loyal BJP worker. I hope I have done justice to the responsibility that was given to me – be it the state president of the BJP or the chief minister of Tripura. I have worked for the overall development of Tripura and for ensuring peace for the people of the state, ”Dev told reporters.
“The 2023 election is coming, and the party wants a responsible organizer to take charge of the issues here. Government can be formed only if the organization is strong. After the election, obviously someone will be the chief minister, ”he added.
Dev visited New Delhi on Thursday and met Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP president JP Naddar to discuss the party’s issues in the northeastern state. The outgoing chief minister said, “The party wants me to work to strengthen the organization.”
“People here want a long-term BJP government. If a person like me works for the organization, it will definitely help the cause,” he said.
Dev was appointed chief minister after the BJP came to power in 2018, ending the Left Front’s 25-year rule. There are rumors of infighting within the BJP’s state unit.
Despite multiple protests from party colleagues, the BJP had previously believed in Dev – the slogan ‘Stop Revolution, Save Tripura’ was raised during the visit of party national observer Binod Sonkar in Agartala – and the BJP MLAs’ visit to Delhi to complain about his handling of other issues.
Biplob Dev’s former health minister in the cabinet, Sudip Roy Barman, was removed from his post due to a dispute with the chief minister. Roy Barman finally left the BJP along with another MLA Ashish Kumar Saha and joined the Congress in January this year.
Biplob Kumar Dev contested the Tripura Assembly elections for the first time in 2018 and became MLA from Banamalipur Assembly constituency in Agartala by a margin of 9,549 votes and was elected as the Chief Minister for the BJP’s debut in Tripura.
